How the time card calculator works

Add one row per shift. A clock-out earlier than clock-in is treated as the following day, allowing an overnight shift such as 10 PM to 6 AM.

Unpaid break minutes are removed from each shift. The combined paid time is split at the optional weekly threshold; this is an arithmetic estimate, not a determination of overtime law.

Paid minutes = clock-out − clock-in − unpaid break; add 24 hours when clock-out is earlier

Worked example

A 9:00 AM–5:30 PM shift spans 8.5 hours. Subtracting a 30-minute unpaid lunch leaves 8 paid hours. Five identical shifts total 40 regular hours; with a 40-hour threshold, any additional paid time appears as overtime.

Assumptions and practical limits

A break cannot exceed its shift length. Invalid rows suppress the total so a bad entry cannot silently distort payroll.

Overtime rules may depend on daily hours, workweek definitions, jurisdiction, contracts, and exemptions. The calculator only applies one total-hours threshold.

Frequently asked questions

How are overnight shifts handled?

When clock-out is earlier than clock-in, it is treated as occurring on the next day.

Does this calculate overtime pay?

No. It separates hours only; it does not apply a wage multiplier.

Can I enter several shifts?

Yes. Add a row for every shift and remove the last row if it is unnecessary.
