How to convert salary to hourly

Divide your annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year. For a standard full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, that is 2,080 hours. Enter your pay and how often you receive it, and this calculator converts it into hourly, daily, weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly, and annual figures.

Salary to hourly formula

Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)
Annual salary = Hourly rate × Hours per week × Weeks per year

Daily pay is your hourly rate multiplied by the hours you work in a day. Weekly pay is annual pay divided by paid weeks, biweekly pay is two weeks of pay, semimonthly pay is annual pay divided by 24, and monthly pay is annual pay divided by 12.

Example: $50,000 a year is how much an hour?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $50,000 a year works out to 2,080 hours, so the hourly rate is $50,000 ÷ 2,080, or about $24.04 per hour. That is roughly $961.54 per week, $1,923.08 every two weeks, and $4,166.67 per month before taxes.

Common salary to hourly conversions

These figures assume 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks, or 2,080 hours a year:

$30,000.00 per year$14.42 per hour
$40,000.00 per year$19.23 per hour
$50,000.00 per year$24.04 per hour
$60,000.00 per year$28.85 per hour
$75,000.00 per year$36.06 per hour
$100,000.00 per year$48.08 per hour

Biweekly vs. semimonthly pay

Biweekly pay arrives every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks a year when you are paid for 52 weeks. Semimonthly pay arrives twice a month on fixed dates, which is 24 paychecks a year. A semimonthly paycheck is slightly larger than a biweekly one because the same annual pay is split into fewer checks.

Frequently asked questions

How many working hours are in a year?

A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. If you take two weeks of unpaid time off, you work about 2,000 hours. Part-time schedules have proportionally fewer hours.

Should I count vacation weeks?

If you are salaried with paid time off, keep 52 paid weeks because your salary already covers them. If you are paid hourly and do not get paid for time off, set paid weeks to the number of weeks you actually work so the annual figure is accurate.

Does this show pay before or after taxes?

All figures are gross pay before taxes, deductions, and benefits. Your take-home pay will be lower depending on where you live and what is withheld from each paycheck.

How do I convert an hourly wage to a salary?

Choose “Per hour” as the pay period and enter your wage. The calculator multiplies it by your hours per week and paid weeks per year to find the annual salary, then fills in every other pay period.

What if I work overtime?

Overtime is usually paid at a higher rate, so include only your regular hours here. You can estimate overtime separately by multiplying the extra hours by your overtime rate.

How the salary to hourly calculator works

Enter a pay amount and choose the period it covers: per hour, per day, per week, every two weeks, twice a month, per month, or per year. Then tell the calculator how many hours you work each week, how many days that is spread over, and how many paid weeks are in your year. The defaults are a 40-hour, five-day week for 52 weeks, which is the standard full-time schedule used by most US employers and salary surveys.

The calculator first converts whatever you entered into an annual figure, then divides that annual figure back out into every other period. The headline result is your hourly rate, unless you entered an hourly rate, in which case it shows the annual salary. Below that you get daily, weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly, and annual pay rounded to the cent, along with the number of working hours per year your inputs imply.

Conversion formulas

Hours per year = Hours per week × Paid weeks per year
Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ Hours per year
Annual salary = Hourly rate × Hours per year
Daily pay = Hourly rate × (Hours per week ÷ Days per week)

With the default schedule, hours per year are 40 × 52 = 2,080. A $50,000 salary divided by 2,080 hours is $24.04 per hour. Over five days that is $192.31 per day, $961.54 per week, $1,923.08 every two weeks, $2,083.33 twice a month, and $4,166.67 per month.

Going the other way, $22 per hour at 40 hours for 52 weeks is 22 × 2,080 = $45,760 per year. If the same worker takes four unpaid weeks off, the paid weeks drop to 48, hours per year become 1,920, and the annual figure falls to $42,240.

The 2,080-hour year and the quick mental shortcut

The 2,080 figure is simply 40 hours multiplied by 52 weeks. It is the convention used for salaried jobs because salaried employees are paid for their vacation and holidays, so every week of the year counts as a paid week. If you want a rough conversion without a calculator, halve the salary in thousands: $50,000 a year is roughly $25 an hour, and $80,000 is roughly $40. The exact figures are a little lower ($24.04 and $38.46) because 2,080 is more than 2,000.

Hourly workers often are not paid for time off. If you are paid only for the hours you work, reduce the paid weeks to the number you actually work. Someone with two weeks of unpaid vacation and a week of unpaid holidays should enter 49 weeks, not 52.

Biweekly and semimonthly are not the same thing

Biweekly pay means a check every two weeks, which is 26 checks a year. Semimonthly pay means two checks a month on fixed dates, such as the 15th and the last day, which is 24 checks a year. Because the annual total is the same, each biweekly check is slightly smaller than each semimonthly check: $1,923.08 versus $2,083.33 on a $50,000 salary.

The flip side is that two months of every year contain three biweekly paydays. If you budget by the month on a biweekly schedule, those months bring an extra check, which is why the biweekly and monthly figures in the results do not simply differ by a factor of two.

Common mistakes and what the calculator leaves out

The most common error is converting a salary at 40 hours when you routinely work more. An exempt salaried employee earning $60,000 who actually works 50 hours a week has an effective hourly rate of 60,000 ÷ (50 × 52) = $23.08, not the $28.85 the 40-hour conversion suggests. Enter your real hours to see the rate you are actually earning.

All figures are gross pay. The calculator does not deduct income tax, Social Security, Medicare, health premiums, or retirement contributions, and it does not add overtime, bonuses, tips, or the value of benefits. For non-exempt hourly workers, US federal law requires overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate for hours beyond 40 in a week, which the tool does not model.

  • Use the paid weeks you actually receive, not 52, if your time off is unpaid
  • Enter the hours you really work, not the hours in your contract, to find your effective rate
  • Remember that employer-paid health insurance and retirement matching add to total compensation but not to these numbers
  • Compare job offers on the annual figure, then check the hourly rate to see what each one expects from your time

Frequently asked questions

How much is $50,000 a year per hour?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $50,000 a year is $24.04 per hour. That assumes 2,080 paid hours; fewer paid weeks or more hours per week would change the rate.

How much is $20 an hour per year?

$20 an hour at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $41,600 a year, or about $3,467 a month before taxes. At 35 hours a week it is $36,400.

How many working hours are in a year?

A standard full-time year is 2,080 hours, which is 40 hours times 52 weeks. Subtracting two weeks of vacation and ten federal holidays leaves about 1,920 hours of actual work, but salaried employees are still paid for all 2,080.

What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?

Biweekly pay arrives every two weeks, for 26 checks a year. Semimonthly pay arrives twice a month on set dates, for 24 checks a year. Semimonthly checks are slightly larger because the same annual pay is split into fewer payments.

How do I convert a monthly salary to an hourly rate?

Multiply the monthly amount by 12 to get the annual salary, then divide by your hours per year. $4,000 a month is $48,000 a year, which is $23.08 per hour at 2,080 hours.

Does the calculator include overtime or taxes?

No. Every figure is gross base pay. Overtime, bonuses, and tips are not added, and taxes and deductions are not subtracted, so your take-home pay will be lower than the amounts shown.
