How the inflation calculation works

Inflation is measured by comparing price levels over time. The calculator looks up the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the two years you choose and scales your amount by the ratio between them. If prices doubled between the two years, the amount doubles too. Running the calculation backwards (from a later year to an earlier one) uses the same ratio in reverse, so a dollar from today shows up as a smaller amount in the past.

Inflation formula

Value in end year = Amount × CPI in end year ÷ CPI in start year
Total inflation = (CPI in end year ÷ CPI in start year − 1) × 100
Average annual rate = (CPI in end year ÷ CPI in start year)^(1 ÷ years) − 1

The average annual rate is a geometric mean, which is the constant yearly rate that would compound to the same total change. It is not the simple average of each year's headline inflation figure, although the two are usually close.

What is the CPI?

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) is published monthly by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. It tracks the average price of a fixed basket of goods and services that urban households buy, including food, housing, clothing, transportation, medical care, and recreation. The index is set so that the 1982 to 1984 average equals 100, so a value of 200 means prices are roughly double what they were in that base period. This calculator uses the annual average of the twelve monthly readings for each complete year.

Example: $100 in 2000 compared with 2024

The annual average CPI was 172.2 in 2000 and 313.689 in 2024. Dividing 313.689 by 172.2 gives a ratio of about 1.8217, so $100 in 2000 has the same buying power as roughly $182.17 in 2024. That is total inflation of about 82.2% over 24 years, which works out to an average of about 2.53% per year.

Where the data comes from

DATA NOTE

Index values are the CPI-U, All Items, U.S. city average (1982 to 1984 = 100) published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, covering 1913 through July 2026. Complete years use the annual average of the twelve monthly readings. The current year, 2026, is not complete yet, so it uses the most recent monthly reading (July). Recent figures are refreshed from the BLS public API about once a week; nothing is fetched while you use the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this result differ from other inflation calculators?

Most differences come down to which CPI reading is used. This calculator uses the annual average for each complete year and the latest monthly reading for the current year. Other tools may compare a specific month (for example, January to January), use a year-to-date average, or use a different index such as CPI-W, the chained CPI, or the PCE price index. Each approach is valid, but they will produce slightly different numbers.

What was inflation in a given decade?

Based on annual average CPI, prices rose about 7.8% per year during the 1970s, 4.7% per year in the 1980s, 2.8% per year in the 1990s, 2.4% per year in the 2000s, and 1.7% per year in the 2010s. From 2020 to 2024 the average was about 4.9% per year, driven by the 2021 and 2022 spike. Select the first and last year of any period to see the exact figures.

Is this the same as the cost of living?

Not exactly. CPI measures the price of a fixed basket of goods averaged across US cities, so it is a national inflation benchmark. Cost of living also depends on where you live, what you buy, and how your spending changes over time. Housing in a large city, for example, may have risen far faster than the overall index.

How often is the data updated?

The BLS releases CPI figures monthly, usually around the middle of the following month, and the annual average for a year becomes final when the December figure is published in mid-January. This calculator refreshes its recent data from the BLS about once a week, so the current year shows the latest monthly reading and switches to the annual average once the year is complete.

What is $1 from 1913 worth today?

With a CPI of 9.9 in 1913 and 313.689 in 2024, one dollar in 1913 had about the same buying power as $31.69 in 2024. Put another way, a dollar today buys what roughly three cents bought in 1913.
