How to calculate a tip

To calculate a tip, multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage expressed as a decimal. Add the tip to the bill to find the total, and divide the total by the number of people to split it evenly.

Tip formula

Tip = Bill × (Tip percentage ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip
Per person = Total ÷ Number of people

Example: 20% tip on a $85 bill split 4 ways

A 20% tip on an $85 bill is $17, making the total $102. Split between 4 people, each person pays $25.50, which includes $4.25 in tip.
