Hours to Decimal Calculator

Convert an hours-and-minutes duration into decimal hours.

Minutes must be from 0 to 59.

Decimal hours

—

Two separate fields, not one clock time

Hours and minutes go in their own fields rather than as a single H:M value. Minutes must land between 0 and 59; 60 or higher is rejected because that extra hour needs to be carried into the hours field first — 1 hour 90 minutes has to be entered as 2 hours 30 minutes.

Hours has no upper limit, so multi-day totals work fine, but it can't go negative. Leave a field blank or use an out-of-range minute value and the result area shows a dash instead of a number.

Converting minutes into a decimal fraction

Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60

Every minute is 1/60 of an hour, so the minutes field is always divided by 60 before it's added to the hours field. 7 hours 45 minutes: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so the result is 7.75 decimal hours. The tool also reports total minutes for the same entry: 7 × 60 + 45 = 465.

Not every minute count divides evenly. 10 minutes is 10 ÷ 60 = 0.16666…, which the calculator rounds to four decimal places and displays as 0.1667. 6 minutes is cleaner: 6 ÷ 60 = 0.1, so 6 hours 6 minutes converts to exactly 6.1.

The 7:30 mistake

The most common error converting time by hand is treating the minutes as if they were already a decimal — reading 7 hours 30 minutes as 7.3 instead of 7.5. Minutes are a fraction of 60, not of 100, so 30 minutes is 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5, not 0.30.

The reverse mistake shows up when people enter a decimal-looking number directly into the minutes field: typing 45 for minutes is correct (it becomes 0.75 of an hour), but typing 0.75 into the minutes field is wrong, since the field expects whole minutes from 0 to 59, not a fraction.

Where decimal hours get used

Payroll systems, invoicing tools, and spreadsheets generally expect decimal hours rather than hours-and-minutes text:

  • Payroll: 7 hours 45 minutes at $22/hour → 7.75 × $22 = $170.50 gross pay
  • Freelance invoice: 3 hours 20 minutes billed at $60/hour → 3.3333 × $60 = $200.00
  • Weekly overtime check: 40 hours 30 minutes against a 40-hour threshold → 40.5 decimal hours, 0.5 hour over
  • Time-tracking export: 6 hours 6 minutes logged for a spreadsheet formula → 6.1 decimal hours
  • Meeting log: 2 hours 15 minutes of calls → 2.25 decimal hours entered into a project tracker
  • Mileage reimbursement window: 1 hour 6 minutes of driving → 1.1 decimal hours

Frequently asked questions

Is 7:30 equal to 7.3 or 7.5 decimal hours?

7.5. Thirty minutes is half an hour, and 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5. Reading it as 7.3 comes from treating minutes as hundredths instead of sixtieths of an hour.

How do I convert 45 minutes into decimal hours?

Divide by 60: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75. Entered as 0 hours 45 minutes, the calculator returns 0.75.

Why won't the calculator accept 90 in the minutes field?

Minutes are restricted to 0–59 so every duration has one unambiguous representation. Enter 90 minutes as 1 hour 30 minutes instead, which converts to 1.5 decimal hours.

Why does 10 minutes convert to 0.1667 instead of a rounder number?

10 ÷ 60 = 0.16666…, a repeating decimal. The calculator rounds the result to four decimal places, so it displays as 0.1667 rather than truncating or rounding to fewer digits.

How do I turn a decimal-hour result back into minutes?

Multiply the decimal value by 60. The calculator does this for you and lists it as "Total minutes" — 7.75 hours shows as 465 total minutes (7.75 × 60 = 465).

Can I use this for payroll math?

Yes — once you have the decimal figure, multiply it by an hourly rate. 7 hours 45 minutes converts to 7.75, and at $22 an hour that's 7.75 × 22 = $170.50 in gross pay.
