How the hours & minutes calculator works
Each duration is converted to minutes before addition or subtraction. The signed total is then normalized back into whole hours and remaining minutes, so inputs such as 90 minutes work without manual carrying.
These fields describe durations, not times of day. That means hours can exceed 24 and subtraction may legitimately produce a negative duration.
Worked example
Adding 2 hours 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes gives 165 + 90 = 255 minutes. Dividing by 60 produces 4 whole hours with 15 minutes remaining, so the normalized answer is 4 hr 15 min.
Assumptions and practical limits
Minutes are accepted as whole or decimal numbers, though the displayed normalized remainder is most intuitive with whole minutes. Blank or nonnumeric fields suppress the result.
A negative answer keeps its sign. For example, 1:15 minus 2:00 is −45 minutes, displayed as −0 hr 45 min.
