Minecraft XP Calculator
Calculate experience points required between Minecraft levels and find total XP at any level in Java Edition.
XP needed to reach target
1,395
Level 0 holds 0 of the 1,395 points needed for level 30 (0%).
How it works
Minecraft's experience system uses different formulas depending on your level range. The total XP required to reach a given level from zero follows a piecewise function that accelerates sharply as levels increase. This is why enchanting feels progressively more expensive at higher levels.
These formulas calculate total XP from level zero. To find XP needed between two levels, subtract the total at the lower level from the total at the higher level.
The cost of a single level keeps growing: going from level 15 to 16 costs 37 points, level 30 to 31 costs 112 points, and level 50 to 51 costs 292 points. This is why banking XP to very high levels is so inefficient.
Worked example
Reaching level 30 from scratch costs 1395 total points — that's what the enchanting table's level-30 requirement really represents in raw XP.
But a level-30 enchantment only consumes 3 levels, dropping you from 30 to 27. In points, that's 1395 − 1089 = 306 — a fraction of the full climb.
This is why players hover around level 30 for enchanting: grind to 30, enchant for 3 levels' worth of points, then top back up. Climbing from 27 back to 30 costs 306 points, far less than rebuilding from zero.
Java vs Bedrock Edition
This calculator uses the Java Edition XP formula, the most common and official system. Bedrock Edition historically used a slightly different curve, but modern Bedrock versions have aligned closely to Java's formula.
When a player dies in Java Edition, they drop experience orbs worth 7 points per level, capped at 100 points — everything beyond that is lost. This cap is why dying at high levels is so punishing: the XP you can recover is a tiny fraction of what the levels cost.
Frequently asked questions
How much total XP is level 30?
According to the Java Edition formula, reaching level 30 requires 1395 total experience points from level zero.
Why does the same mob XP feel worth less at high levels?
The per-level cost keeps growing. A zombie drops 5 XP points. At level 5, that's a third of the way to the next level (which costs 17 points). At level 40, the next level costs 202 points, so the same zombie barely moves the bar.
Do XP farms measure experience in points or levels?
Farms and mobs drop experience points. An XP farm that 'generates 50 levels per hour' is actually dropping 50 levels' worth of points in that time, which translates to thousands of points. The calculator helps you verify those numbers.
