How it works
Your in-game sensitivity setting is meaningless on its own — a sensitivity of 0.35 means nothing without knowing your mouse DPI. A player with an 800 DPI mouse at 0.35 sensitivity plays the same speed as a player with a 1600 DPI mouse at 0.175 sensitivity.
Effective DPI (eDPI) normalizes sensitivity across different DPI settings by multiplying them together. It's the single number that matters when comparing how fast you turn.
Once you know your eDPI, you can switch mice or DPI settings while staying consistent by adjusting your in-game sensitivity. If you change your mouse from 800 DPI to 1600 DPI and want the same turn speed, divide your old sensitivity by 2.
Worked example
You play with an 800 DPI mouse and 0.35 in-game sensitivity. Your eDPI is 800 × 0.35 = 280.
You buy a new mouse with 1600 DPI and want to keep the same turn speed. To find your new sensitivity: 280 ÷ 1600 = 0.175. Set your sensitivity to 0.175, and you'll turn at exactly the same speed.
eDPI stays the same, but your DPI and sensitivity are inversely related. Higher DPI means lower sensitivity for the same eDPI.
Some players prefer running higher DPI with proportionally lower sensitivity because slow, precise movements register in finer increments — the turn speed stays identical as long as the eDPI matches.
Comparing eDPI across games
Each game converts mouse movement to rotation using a different formula. The sensitivity setting is just a multiplier — the actual rotation speed depends on each game's engine. An eDPI of 280 in one game might spin you 180 degrees, while the same eDPI in another game spins you 90 degrees.
This means eDPI is only meaningful as a comparison within the same game. You can't say "my eDPI is better than someone else's" unless you're both playing the same title.
Pro players cluster around different eDPI ranges depending on the game and role. Tactical shooters often see low eDPI (200–400) because precision matters. Fast-paced games favor higher eDPI (400–800) to flick quickly and turn 180 degrees. The best eDPI for you is whatever feels natural after practice — start with a pro range for your game, then adjust.

Does higher DPI reduce input lag or improve tracking?
Modern mouse sensors are accurate across the entire DPI range — 400 DPI and 3200 DPI have the same latency and tracking quality if the sensor is good. Pick your DPI for comfort and wrist position. Many players prefer higher DPI (1600–3200) for less mouse movement and better ergonomics. Then adjust sensitivity to hit your target eDPI.
Why do pros use low sensitivity?
Low sensitivity forces larger arm movements, which are more consistent and repeatable than small wrist flicks. Your arm moves at a predictable speed, so you develop muscle memory and aim faster. Pros also have room to flick at any angle without running out of mousepad. If you aim better with low eDPI, that's the right choice — consistency beats speed.
