How it works

The Elo rating system predicts the probability that you'll win against an opponent of a given rating. This calculator uses that model to simulate how your rating climbs as you play and win at a consistent rate.

The key insight is that your current rating isn't necessarily your true strength. If you're scoring better than 50% against equal-rated opponents, you're actually stronger than your rating reflects. The calculator computes an implied performance ceiling — the rating your win rate corresponds to if you play long enough.

E = 1 / (1 + 10^((Ropp − R) / 400))
New rating = R + K × (score − E)

In each simulated game, you're paired against an opponent rated at your current rating. Your expected score E is computed from the Elo formula. If your actual score (your win rate S) exceeds E, your rating rises; otherwise it falls. Over many games, your rating converges toward your implied ceiling.

Worked example

Say you have a 1200 rating and a 60% score rate against equal-rated opponents, with K=20.

Your implied ceiling is 1200 + 400×log₁₀(0.6÷0.4) ≈ 1200 + 400×0.176 ≈ 1270.

In the first game: E₀ = 1/(1 + 10^((1200−1270)÷400)) ≈ 0.60, so you gain about 20×(0.60−0.50) = +2.0 rating points.

Since your 60% score rate beats the 50% expected against equal-rated opponents, your rating climbs steadily until it approaches the ceiling.

Why your win rate is the lever

Raising your score rate even a few percent moves your ceiling by dozens of points. The difference between 55% and 60% is huge over 100 games. This is why the most important step in rating improvement is identifying what mistakes are costing you points, then fixing them.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the rating climb flatten over time?

As your rating approaches your ceiling, your expected score E rises, so the gap between your actual score and E shrinks. The rating gain per game decreases. Eventually, when your rating equals your ceiling, E = 50%, your score rate equals the expected score, and your rating stabilizes.

What K-factor should I pick?

K controls how much your rating moves per game. The standard values are: 40 for new or provisional players (largest swings to find your true rating quickly), 20 for typical adult players, and 10 for very strong players rated 2400+ by FIDE. Some Elo-based servers use K=32 for standard play. Check your platform's rating system for the exact value.

Does this match Chess.com or Lichess exactly?

No. Chess.com and Lichess both use Glicko or Glicko-2, not classical Elo. Glicko adds rating deviation, which adjusts how much your rating moves based on the time since your last game. This calculator uses a classical Elo approximation and assumes you play regularly. The results are close for active players but will diverge if you take long breaks.
