How it works

Pace is how long it takes to run one unit of distance, usually written as minutes per kilometer or per mile. Pace, time, and distance lock together: know any two and the third follows.

This calculator lets you switch between three views: solve for pace (given time and distance), solve for finish time (given distance and pace), or solve for distance (given time and pace). All results include equivalent metrics in both kilometers and miles, plus your speed in km/h and mph.

Pace = Time ÷ Distance
Time = Pace × Distance
Distance = Time ÷ Pace
Speed = Distance ÷ Time

When converting between per-km and per-mile paces, multiply minutes per km by 1.609344 to get minutes per mile. For example, a 5:00/km pace is approximately 8:03/mile.

All calculations work internally in seconds and kilometers for precision. Times are displayed as h:mm:ss, omitting hours when they are zero.

Worked example

Imagine you ran 5 kilometers in 25 minutes. What was your pace, and how fast were you going?

Your pace = 25:00 ÷ 5 km = 5:00 per kilometer

Converted to miles: 5:00 × 1.609344 ≈ 8:03 per mile

Your distance in miles = 5 km ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 3.11 miles

Your speed = 5 km ÷ (25 ÷ 60 hours) = 12.0 km/h ≈ 7.46 mph

Frequently asked questions

What is a good 5K pace for beginners?

Many beginner runners finish a 5K in 25–35 minutes, a pace of roughly 5:00–7:00 per km. Anywhere in that range is a fine start. Aerobic fitness builds over weeks of consistent running, and pace improves with it, so early on the useful target is time on your feet rather than a number.

How do I convert minutes per km to minutes per mile?

Since 1 mile = 1.609344 km, a mile pace is faster than a kilometer pace. Multiply your min/km by 1.609344 to get min/mile. For example: 6:00/km × 1.609344 ≈ 9:39/mile. Conversely, divide min/mile by 1.609344 to convert back to min/km.

What does 'negative splits' mean?

Negative splits means running the second half of a race faster than the first. It takes discipline to hold back early so you have the energy to speed up late, which is why most well-paced personal bests are run this way. Positive splits (a slower second half) are more common for beginners, because going out too fast means fatigue catches up before the finish.
